Steamed At The Buffet

Baily’s buffet-style Pizza opened in Searcy, Arkansas last month, and the place offers discounts to college students, teachers, cops, seasoned citizens, military members, and – on Sundays – 10% off to anybody who walks in the door with a church service program in hand. Apparently, the owner’s not out to make a real killing in the restaurant business.

But it’s that latter discount that’s drawn the ire of the patriarchs at Wisconsin-based Our Lady of Perpetual Outrage, who fired off an aggrieved “cease and desist” letter to said owner earlier this month:

A pizza place in Searcy, Arkansas, is in trouble with a national atheist organization. Bailey’s Pizza offers a 10% discount on Sundays to customers who bring in a church bulletin. The Freedom from Religion Foundation sent the restaurant’s owners a letter demanding they stop the discount because it is discriminatory under the 1964 Civil Rights act.

According to Elizabeth Cavell, a spokesperson for the national atheist group based in Wisconsin, Baily’s Pizza’s owner Steven Rose discriminates against people who don’t go to church. “The law requires places of public accommodation to offer their services to customers without regard to race, color, religion or national origin.”

That’s a little over the top; Rose isn’t denying service to anybody, although he does offer discounts to old farts, cops, kids, and folks who wander in with a church bulletin on a Sunday – and hey, any atheist can pop into a church, grab a bulletin, and pop on down to the buffet. So he’s doing nothing wrong, and they can pretty much go pound sand.

What the high muckety-mucks over at the atheist church fail to grasp is the fundamental fact that Americans have a Constitutional right to freedom ofreligion – not freedom from religion. However fervently they may wish to repress others, it’s not something that they get to do.
