Still Running XP?

If so, you’re not getting important updates, which is one of the things Micro$oft was making a lot of noise about as part of their drive to push you into upgrading to a newer version of their OS. But it happens that there’s one version that will continue to be updated until April 2019, and a fairly simple registry addition is all that’s needed.

To apply the hack, create a text file with a .reg extension and the contents below:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Run it by double-clicking in Windows Explorer.

It makes the system appear to be running Windows Embedded, which does continue to receive updates.

Micro$oft has become aware of this hack, and they’re not happy. They issued a statement last Monday, cautioning people not to try it because the updates “don’t fully protect” XP boxes. Right.
